How to Size an HVLS Fan for Your Space

One of the most common questions we hear is simple: “What size HVLS fan do I need?” The answer depends on three things — the size of your space, your ceiling height, and how even you want the coverage to be.

Coverage Per Fan vs. Real-World Layout

A single 13 ft HVLS fan can deliver strong airflow across a large area — up to around 6,000 sq ft at its maximum reach. But maximum reach and even comfort are two different things. For full, consistent coverage in a real building, fans are usually spaced to cover roughly 2,000–2,500 sq ft each, with some overlap so there are no dead spots.

Ceiling Height Matters

HVLS fans need height to work properly. As a general rule, the fan should be mounted with enough clearance below it and enough space above for air to circulate. The 13 ft REM-4, for example, calls for a minimum ceiling height of about 16.4 ft.
